You need this when…

  • Water loss or seepage into nearby land
  • Cracked, lifted or displaced lining slabs
  • Open, washed-out or vegetated joints
  • Eroded concrete and exposed aggregate
  • Brackish or saline water attacking the concrete

The work, step by step

General guidance based on the manufacturer data sheets. Site conditions differ: confirm the system with MCT before you start. Where we do not name a product, ask us and we will confirm the right one.

  1. Step 1: Divert, clean and inspect

Divert or stop the flow. Remove silt, vegetation, loose concrete and old joint filler. Settled embankments or failed slopes need an engineer's assessment before relining.

  2. Step 2: New lining: watertight concrete and joints

SikaControl-760 (dams, canals, p.1) or Sika Plastocrete N PK (canals, p.1) in the concrete. Cast Sika Waterbar V-20 L SH into construction joints and O-20 SH into expansion joints; both list canals (p.1).

Sika Plastocrete N PK Sika Request a quotation

Sika® Plastocrete® N PK is recommended for use in waterproofing of masonry and concrete structures such as: Reservoirs and dams , Sewerage works , Canals , Culverts, tunnels , Water tanks, swimming pools and wherever waterproof concrete is required . (TDS p.1)

What we need from you

  • Channel length, section and lining type (concrete, brick, stone)
  • Photos of cracks, joints and eroded areas
  • Water type: fresh, brackish, saline or chlorinated
  • Closure window: how long can the flow be stopped?

Site conditions

  • Flow stopped long enough for curing before immersion (Sikaflex-2c SL p.2; Sikaflex-1A p.5)
  • Sound lining with at least 1.0 N/mm² pull-off for the slurry (SikaSeal-105 PK p.2)

Not included

  • Earthworks, embankment repair and structural relining
  • Gates, valves and metalwork

Questions customers ask

Can the joints be sealed with water still flowing?

No. Sikaflex-2c SL needs 3 days' cure and a primer before total immersion (p.2), and Sikaflex-1A needs full curing before immersion (p.5).

Our channel carries brackish water. What coating?

SikaTop-550 Seal lists protection against brackish water and coating seawater channels, and has high resistance to chloride ion diffusion (p.1).

Which sealant for the sloping sides?

Sikaflex-1A is a non-sag sealant (p.1), so it stays in sloped and vertical joints. Sikaflex-2c SL is self-levelling and ideal for horizontal joints (p.1).

Will the coating work on an old brick-lined channel?

SikaSeal-105 PK needs a sound surface with at least 1.0 N/mm² pull-off, pre-dampened (p.2). Weak brickwork must be repaired first. Ask us: it depends on site conditions.
