Step-by-step solution

Water & wastewater treatment plants

Clarifiers, filter beds, clear-water reservoirs and process tanks need watertight concrete, sealed joints and the right lining for each water type. Drinking-water compartments take only products approved for potable contact.

You need this when…

  • Leaking construction or expansion joints in tanks and channels
  • Seepage stains and white salt deposits on outer walls
  • Eroded or spalled concrete at the waterline
  • Corroded steel walkways, weirs and pipe supports
  • New plant at design or tender stage

The work, step by step

General guidance based on the manufacturer data sheets. Site conditions differ: confirm the system with MCT before you start. Where we do not name a product, ask us and we will confirm the right one.

  1. Step 1: New plants: watertight concrete and joints

SikaControl-760 lists sewage and water treatment plants (p.1). Cast Sika Waterbar V-20 L SH into construction joints and O-20 SH into expansion joints (sewage plants and reservoirs, p.1). SikaFuko Swell-1 is a re-injectable hose for construction joints only, installed by trained contractors (p.1, p.2).

  2. Step 2: Survey and split the plant by water type

List each tank as drinking water (clear-water reservoir, treated-water channels) or process and wastewater. The product rules are different. Structural defects need an engineer's assessment.

  3. Step 3: Stop leaks and repair the concrete

Plug running holes with SikaSet Waterplug (NSF/ANSI 61 for potable water contact, p.1). Inject water-bearing cracks with Sika Injection-306, experienced professionals only (p.1). Rebuild with SikaEmaco S 488, listed for water treatment facilities before subsequent coating (p.1).

  4. Step 4: Line drinking-water compartments

Use only SikaTop-550 Seal (BS 6920, p.1) or Sikagard PW (direct potable water contact, p.1; professionals only). Follow local cleaning and disinfection rules before putting them into service (Sikagard PW p.3).

  5. Step 5: Line process and wastewater tanks

Sika Permacor-3326 EG H lines process water, waste water and chemical storage tanks and sludge digesters (p.1). Sikagard-63 N is a chemical-resistant lining for sludge and chemical tanks (p.1). Both are for experienced professionals only (p.1).

  6. Step 6: Seal joints

In drinking-water compartments, use Sikaflex PRO-3 WF (BS 6920, p.1; sewage treatment plants also listed, p.1). In process tanks, Sikadur-Combiflex SG-20 P tape seals movement joints, construction joints, cracks and pipe penetrations (p.1). Never polysulphide sealants in drinking-water compartments (Sika Polysulphide GG p.2).

Questions customers ask

Can one coating serve both the clear-water tank and the sewage side?

Sikagard PW is listed as suitable for direct potable water contact and as sewage resistant (p.1). It is for experienced professionals only (p.1).

Waterbars or swellable hose for construction joints?

Sika Waterbar V-20 L SH is cast into construction joints and O-20 SH into expansion joints (p.1). SikaFuko Swell-1 seals construction joints by swelling and later injection, and is not for movement joints (p.1, p.2).

Can a construction joint be re-sealed years later without breaking concrete?

Yes, if SikaFuko Swell-1 was installed during construction: it can be injected and re-injected at a later stage (p.1).

Which sealant for joints in a drinking-water reservoir?

Sikaflex PRO-3 WF, tested to BS 6920 for drinking water contact (p.1). Do not use polysulphide sealants, whose data sheet says not to use them in contact with drinking water (Sika Polysulphide GG p.2).
