You need this when…

  • Facade tiles falling off after summer heat or the monsoon
  • Hollow tiles on the boundary or front elevation wall
  • Cracks running through tiles at floor levels
  • Damp patches inside behind a tiled outer wall

The work, step by step

General guidance based on the manufacturer data sheets. Site conditions differ: confirm the system with MCT before you start. Where we do not name a product, ask us and we will confirm the right one.

  1. Step 1: Inspect the wall and plan the fixing

Surfaces must be clean, free from grease, oil and loose particles, and as true and flat as possible. Fill blowholes with SikaTop or MonoTop mortars (SikaCeram-90 PK p.2). Heavy stone cladding on high facades is a structural fixing question and needs an engineer's design.

  2. Step 2: Choose an adhesive for outside walls

SikaCeram-90 PK fixes wall tiles and is suitable for indoor and outdoor use, but not on gypsum (SikaCeram-90 PK p.1, p.2). SikaCeram RSG 705 is an epoxy adhesive for interior and exterior vertical use (SikaCeram RSG 705 p.1). SikaCeram-205 PK is listed for outdoor floors, not outdoor walls (SikaCeram-205 PK p.1): ask us before using it on a facade.

SikaCeram RSG 705 Sika Request a quotation

SikaCeram® RSG 705 is used wherever a high degree of chemical resistance and excellent mechanical properties are required, such as: Food production: meat, fish, vegetable and fruit processing, canning areas, dairies and bakeries, Industrial kitchens and catering facilities, Electrical substations… (TDS p.1)

The right product here depends on your site. We confirm it before naming it.

  3. Step 3: Fix in the right weather

Wet absorbent concrete to a saturated surface-dry condition first (SikaCeram-90 PK p.2). Apply between +5 °C and +40 °C. Cover only the area you can tile in 15–30 minutes (SikaCeram-90 PK p.2). In hot, windy weather, use light water fogging for 48 hours after final set, hessian or a water-based curing compound (SikaCeram-90 PK p.2).

  4. Step 4: Grout for exterior use

SikaCeram-600 Tile Grout PK is listed for exterior walls and floors (SikaCeram-600 Tile Grout PK p.1). Never mix it with salty water (SikaCeram-600 Tile Grout PK p.2). Epoxy grouts SikaCeram-850 Design and SikaCeram-855 are for interior use only (SikaCeram-850 Design p.1; SikaCeram-855 p.1).

For filling the spaces of homogeneous tile, ceramic tile, marble, granite, mosaic, and natural stone, over a range of applications as below: Floor and wall, Interior and exterior, Dry and wet area, For dry area, mix SikaCeram®-600 Tile Grout PK with water, Do not mix the fresh material to previou… (TDS p.1,2)

  5. Step 5: Seal the facade movement joints

Keep movement joints at floor levels and building joints. Seal them with an elastic facade sealant over a closed-cell polyethylene backer rod at a 2:1 width-to-depth ratio (Sikaflex AT Facade p.2; Sikaflex Construction AP p.2). Do not use these two on natural stone (Sikaflex AT Facade p.3; Sikaflex Construction AP p.3). For stone, Sikasil-715 WS lists natural stone joints, after checking with Sika (Sikasil-715 WS p.1).

Sikaflex AT Facade Sika Request a quotation

Sikaflex® AT Facade is designed for joint sealing of movement and connection joints, porous and nonporous substrates such as concrete, brick, steel metals. (TDS p.1)

    Temperature stated in TDS
    40 °C to +90 °C (TDS p.2)
Sikaflex Construction AP Sika Request a quotation

Sikaflex® Construction AP is designed for movement and connection joints on porous substrates as well as indoor and outdoor general sealing applications. (TDS p.1)

    Temperature stated in TDS
    −40 °C to +70 °C (TDS p.2)
  6. Step 6: Water-repellent finish on absorbent facades

Sikagard-700 S PK is a clear water repellent for absorbent concrete tiles, brickwork, cement render and natural stone (Sikagard-700 S PK p.1). Test on stone first, because slight darkening can occur (Sikagard-700 S PK p.2).

Questions customers ask

Can SikaCeram-205 PK be used on the outside wall?

Its data sheet lists indoor walls and outdoor floors, not outdoor walls (SikaCeram-205 PK p.1). Ask us: it depends on site conditions. SikaCeram-90 PK is listed for indoor and outdoor use (SikaCeram-90 PK p.1).

Which grout outside?

SikaCeram-600 Tile Grout PK, which is listed for exterior use (SikaCeram-600 Tile Grout PK p.1). SikaCeram-855 is not suitable for external use (SikaCeram-855 p.1).

Will a water repellent change the look of the stone?

On some stones a slight darkening can occur, so test first (Sikagard-700 S PK p.2).

Can the joint sealant be painted to match?

Sikaflex AT Facade can be over-painted with most facade paints after a compatibility trial (Sikaflex AT Facade p.1, p.3). Sikasil-715 WS cannot be over-painted (Sikasil-715 WS p.3).
