  • Dark patches or rings showing through light marble
  • Loose or hollow marble on stairs and landings
  • Dull, etched marble after acid cleaning
  • Oily stains along sealant joints next to stone

The work, step by step

General guidance based on the manufacturer data sheets. Site conditions differ: confirm the system with MCT before you start. Where we do not name a product, ask us and we will confirm the right one.

  1. Step 1: Know the stone and run a test

Find out whether the stone is sensitive to water. SikaCeram-205 PK is only for stone that is not water-sensitive (SikaCeram-205 PK p.1), and SikaCeram-103 PK for moisture-tolerant stone (SikaCeram-103 PK p.1). Always test cleanability and staining before bonding or grouting natural stone (SikaCeram RSG 705 p.3).

  2. Step 2: Prepare the base

Cement bases must be at least 28 days old, sound and free of laitance (SikaCeram-205 PK p.2). Deviation must be less than 5 mm under a 2 m straightedge (SikaCeram-205 PK p.3).

  3. Step 3: Fix the stone

Marble and terrazzo tiles on floors and walls, indoors or outdoors: SikaCeram-90 PK (SikaCeram-90 PK p.1). Stone that is not water-sensitive, on outdoor floors and heavy-traffic floors: SikaCeram-205 PK (SikaCeram-205 PK p.1). Indoor residential marble: SikaCeram-103 PK (SikaCeram-103 PK p.1). Chemical or hygienic areas, or stone over old tiles: SikaCeram RSG 705 (SikaCeram RSG 705 p.1).

  5. Step 5: Seal joints next to stone carefully

Many sealants must not touch natural stone: Sikaflex Construction AP (p.3) and Sikaflex AT Facade (p.3). Sika Sanisil can stain porous stone, marble and granite (Sika Sanisil p.2). Sikasil-715 WS lists natural stone joints, after checking with Sika (Sikasil-715 WS p.1). For floor joints, Sikaflex PRO-3 needs a trial for plasticiser migration on stone first (Sikaflex PRO-3 p.3).

  6. Step 6: Protect and clean

Absorbent external stone can be given a clear water-repellent treatment (Sikagard-700 S PK p.1). Test first, because some stones darken slightly (Sikagard-700 S PK p.2). For routine mopping of marble and granite, use the pH-balanced SikaCeram-951 Multisurface Cleaner (SikaCeram-951 Multisurface Cleaner p.1). Never use SikaCeram-951 Surface Stain Remover on marble, limestone, terrazzo, travertine or unsealed stone (SikaCeram-951 Surface Stain Remover p.2).

Questions customers ask

Will the adhesive stain white marble?

Staining depends on the stone, so do a test area first (SikaCeram RSG 705 p.3). SikaCeram-103 PK is a white powder (SikaCeram-103 PK p.1). For a specific stone, ask us: it depends on site conditions.

Which cleaner is safe for marble?

SikaCeram-951 Multisurface Cleaner is pH-balanced and lists marble and granite (SikaCeram-951 Multisurface Cleaner p.1). Never use SikaCeram-951 Surface Stain Remover on marble (SikaCeram-951 Surface Stain Remover p.2).

Can I use bathroom silicone along marble?

Sika Sanisil is not recommended on porous stone, marble or granite because of staining (Sika Sanisil p.2). Sikasil-715 WS lists natural stone joints after checking with Sika (Sikasil-715 WS p.1).

Which adhesive for outdoor granite steps?

SikaCeram-205 PK is listed for outdoor floors and for stone that is not water-sensitive (SikaCeram-205 PK p.1). SikaCeram-90 PK is also suitable outdoors (SikaCeram-90 PK p.1).
