You need this when…

  • Joint sealant torn out or missing in a car park
  • Forklift wheels breaking the joint edges
  • Water and dirt getting into slab joints
  • Weeds and cracks along road or pavement joints

The work, step by step

General guidance based on the manufacturer data sheets. Site conditions differ: confirm the system with MCT before you start. Where we do not name a product, ask us and we will confirm the right one.

  1. Step 1: Clean out and repair the edges

Remove old sealant, laitance and loose particles. Repair damaged joint edges with Sika repair products. After saw-cutting, flush away all slurry and let the joint dry (Sikaflex PRO-3 p.4).

  2. Step 2: Size the joint

Sikaflex PRO-3: 10–40 mm wide at a 1:0.8 width-to-depth ratio. For example, at 6 m spacing, the minimum is 10 × 10 mm inside and 20 × 17 mm outside (Sikaflex PRO-3 p.2, p.3). Sika Polysulphide PG: 6–50 mm wide, a 2:1 ratio for moving joints, and at least 20 mm deep for trafficked joints (Sika Polysulphide PG p.2).

  3. Step 3: Backer rod and primer

Insert a closed-cell polyethylene backer rod (Sikaflex PRO-3 p.3). For polysulphide, lay bond-breaker tape over the backer and prime the two joint sides. Wait 30 minutes to 3 hours before sealing (Sika Polysulphide PG p.3). In wet conditions, use Sika Primer PS (Sika Polysulphide PG p.2).

  4. Step 4: Car parks, warehouses and factory floors

Sikaflex PRO-3 is for floors, pedestrian and traffic areas, car-park decks and warehouse and production floors, with ±35 % movement (Sikaflex PRO-3 p.1). Sikaflex Floor is for connection joints, crack-control joints in industrial floors and joints between precast elements, 10–30 mm wide at 1:0.8 (Sikaflex Floor p.1, p.2).

Sikaflex Floor Sika Request a quotation

Sikaflex® Floor is designed for connection joints in floors, joints for crack control in industrial floors and floor joints between pre-cast concrete elements. (TDS p.1)

    Temperature stated in TDS
    40 °C to +70 °C (TDS p.2)
  5. Step 5: Roads, runways, bridge decks and pavements

Sika Polysulphide PG is a pourable sealant for horizontal joints only: floors, PQC, bridge decks, runways, car parks, roads and culverts (Sika Polysulphide PG p.1, p.2). Pot life is about 2 hours at 25 °C, and curing takes 1 week (Sika Polysulphide PG p.2). Sikasil-728 SL is self-levelling, for pavements, bridges, parking and driveways, on slopes up to 3 %, in joints 6–25 mm wide (Sikasil-728 SL p.1, p.2). Use a backer rod 25 % larger than the joint (Sikasil-728 SL p.3).

    Sika Polysulphide PG Sika

It is used in horizontal joints in many types of buildings and civil engineering constructions such as: Expansion joints in floors, PQC joints, Precast concrete elements, Bridge deck joints, Reservoirs, Vacuum dewatered floor joints/groove sealing, crack repairing, Horizontal trafficable joints, … (TDS p.1)

    Temperature stated in TDS
    -20 °C min. / +80 °C max (TDS p.2)
Sikasil-728 SL Sika Request a quotation

Sikasil®-728 SL is designed to seal horizontal saw cut and expansion joints in concrete pavements on highways, airports, bridges, walkways, parking garages and driveways. (TDS p.1)

    +5 °C min. / +40 °C max (TDS p.2)
    Pack
858 ml (29 fl. oz.) cartridge, 12 cartridges per box
  6. Step 6: Fuel stations and containment bunds

Sikaflex Tank N is for floor joints in petrol stations, handling areas and bunds. It is for professional applicators only (Sikaflex Tank N p.1).

Questions customers ask

Which sealant for a basement car park?

Sikaflex PRO-3 is listed for car-park decks and traffic areas, with ±35 % movement (Sikaflex PRO-3 p.1).

How deep should the sealant be?

For Sikaflex PRO-3, the depth is 0.8 times the width, for example 20 mm wide by 17 mm deep outside at 6 m spacing (Sikaflex PRO-3 p.2, p.3). For polysulphide in trafficked joints, at least 20 mm deep (Sika Polysulphide PG p.2).

When can traffic go back on?

Polysulphide PG has a curing time of 1 week (Sika Polysulphide PG p.2). For PU sealants, ask us: it depends on site conditions and joint depth.

Can it be used on a sloped ramp?

Sikasil-728 SL is self-levelling and limited to slopes of 3 % (Sikasil-728 SL p.1, p.3). On steeper ramps, use a non-sag gun-grade sealant such as Sikaflex PRO-3 (Sikaflex PRO-3 p.1).
