Step-by-step solution

High-performance ready-mix concrete

Ready-mix plants supplying high-strength, pumped or long-haul concrete need a superplasticiser that holds slump, cuts water and works with GGBS, fly ash or microsilica. Durability admixtures cover corrosion and air entrainment where the specification asks for them.

You need this when…

  • High-grade mix with a low water–cement ratio specified
  • Slump loss on long hauls or while waiting for the pump
  • Congested reinforcement in columns, transfer beams or rafts
  • Specification calls for microsilica, GGBS or fly ash

The work, step by step

General guidance based on the manufacturer data sheets. Site conditions differ: confirm the system with MCT before you start. Where we do not name a product, ask us and we will confirm the right one.

  1. Step 1: Set the target and run trial mixes

Agree the grade, slump at site, haul time and binder blend with the client. A mix design for the local materials and trial mixes are required before production (Sika ViscoCrete-3288 PK p.2; SikaPlast-400 PK p.2).

  2. Step 2: Select the superplasticiser

Polycarboxylate superplasticisers give extended slump retention and high strength and suit mixes with GGBS, PFA and microsilica (Sika ViscoCrete-3110 PK p.1; SikaPlast-400 PK p.1). Guide dosages: ViscoCrete-3110 PK 0.2–0.4 % of binder for plastic and 0.4–1.5 % for flowing concrete (p.2); SikaPlast-400 PK 0.8–1.6 % (p.2); ViscoCrete-3288 PK 0.2–1.5 % (p.2).

  3. Step 3: Microsilica and high-performance mixes

Sikament RB 850 PK starts at 0.8–2.0 L per 100 kg cementitious material in normal concrete and 1.5–3.0 L in microsilica concrete (p.2). Sikament RB 858 PK is used the same way at 1.5–2.5 L for microsilica concrete (p.2). These are concrete admixtures, not the SikaCeram-850 tile grout.

  4. Step 4: Help difficult mixes pump

Sika Pump improves the pumpability of mixes with variable fines, low cement or poor grading (p.1). About 0.2–0.4 % of cement increases cohesion; the exact dosage must be set by preliminary testing (p.2).

Sika Pump Sika Request a quotation

Concrete mixes with variable fines, a low cement content or a poor particle size distribution (granulometry) which tend to segregate when pumped and/or create very high pump pressures. (TDS p.1)

  5. Step 5: Add durability admixtures where specified

For marine, parking and industrial exposure, Sika FerroGard CI 222 is dosed at 5 L/m³ and does not change slump (p.2). Where the specification calls for entrained air, SikaControl-720 AER is dosed at 40–400 ml per 100 kg cementitious, starting at 100 ml (p.2). Entrained air lowers strength, which is offset with a plasticiser (Sika AER PK p.2).

  6. Step 6: Batch, place and cure

Add the admixture with the gauging water, never to the dry mix, and wet mix for at least 60 seconds (SikaPlast-400 PK p.2). Secure formwork for the extended workability (p.2). Cure properly, especially in heat, with a curing compound or wet hessian (p.2).

Questions customers ask

Which superplasticiser suits a long summer haul?

A slump-retaining type made for hot climates, such as Sika ViscoCrete-3110 PK, which is listed for hot-weather production with extended transport (p.1). Confirm the dosage in a trial with your cement (p.2).

Can I use it with fly ash or slag?

Yes. SikaPlast-400 PK and ViscoCrete-3110 PK are suitable for mixes with GGBS, PFA and microsilica (SikaPlast-400 PK p.1; Sika ViscoCrete-3110 PK p.1).

What happens if the plant overdoses?

Accidental overdose causes bleeding, segregation and delayed initial set (Sika ViscoCrete-3288 PK p.3). If setting is extended, properties may not be affected when the concrete is properly cured (p.3).

Does FerroGard CI 222 change my mix?

It has no effect on slump or temperature development and does not affect concrete-to-steel bond (Sika FerroGard CI 222 p.2). One dosage of 5 L/m³ is used for all exposures (p.2).

Is Sikament RB 850 PK the same as SikaCeram-850?

No. Sikament RB 850 PK is a superplasticiser for rheoplastic concrete (p.1). SikaCeram-850 Design is an epoxy tile grout (SikaCeram-850 Design p.1).
